Role: Interaction Designer
Teams: News on Search, Assistant Ecosystem
Responsibilities: Designing components, interactions, patterns, assets reflective of Google’s established design system while iterating well beyond in an effort to drive engagement, grow and expand base functionalities and UI library, bringing a more robust experience for news consumption and the utilization of Assistant at important breakpoints, most notably the smart display.
Consistent across both departments were these conducted IXD activities:
Translate concepts into user flows, wireframes, mockups and prototypes (static or animated) that lead to intuitive user experiences.
Facilitate the Google product vision with user-testing—crafting A/B tests, documenting hosted sessions, and securing casual feedback (Feedback Café). Synthesized findings for stakeholder share-outs.
Identify friction points and devise elegant solutions.
Help craft Product Requirement Documents, prioritizing functionalities, articulating user needs and path towards delivery, and expected success metrics.
Make strategic design and user-experience decisions related to Google corpus while pushing for new functions and features.
Take a user-centered, empathic design approach, iterating designs with personas guiding range of experience/response.
Collaborate often with other team members — Eng, PM’s, Legal, Marketing, Design Review, UXW, Conversation Designers, adjacent teams working on similar issues, and major stakeholders.
Maintain exploration decks, competition/adjacency decks, upvoted/greenlit decks, and decks for usability/UXR testing. Responsible for presenting ideas for to stakeholders and committees for launch clearances.
Participate in design sprints to help evolve and push thinking surrounding various projects.
Participated in multiple cross functional projects including:
Launching web articles formatted for Smart Display with voice option
Voice search for web using Assistant—news and commercial applications
Robo calling using Duplex—making/changing appointments
Leveraged propriety layout language (AMP) for elegant visual conversion to Nest Max Hubs while utilizing YouTube OS components as baseline for functional UI system. Launched as a new media card that lives within the carousel of offerings off the home screen. Charged with conceptualizing and protoyping (Sketch, Figma, Principle, After Effects) to help set expectations with engineering and significant stakeholders, curating decks as a source for design and documentation of features, ranked for release shedule.
Added assets to visual library complementary to existing YouTube design system & evolving smart display OS. Participated in Research/Testing (A/B testing, hosted video sessions, surveys) to help vet decisions and plan for future iterations and additional functionalities.
Cross-functional role across Google teams, working asynchronously but with strong collaboration through frequent meetings and decks that I maintained or presented out for formal review to secure necessary approvals.
I maintained collaborative decks, serving two design pursuits: Ideation and versions to be presented to stakeholders and design committees for official approval.
Rounds of UXR (research, usability sessions, in-house shareouts) helped vet decisions and shape functionalities.
Proof-of-concept interaction for demonstration to ENG. After Effects.
Ultimately launched—new feature off the home screen. News articles with optional narration and highlighting. Worked with YouTube and Nest team (OS) to protect UX/UI consistency. Delivered assets, redlines, motion proof-of-concepts to ENG as well as maintaining decks to document development and share high altitude design concepts beyond MVP specs.
After successful launch of new feature I worked with marketing to articulate the product and touch on future iterations and functionalities.
Charged with helping craft new components that helped further parse news stories as they came through the gateway of search. Helped design a new responsive mobile system which appears in Top Stories search, expanding/contracting with user interaction. Charged with ideating beyond the Google corpus to help unlock potentials that could be added to the design system, presenting to stakeholders for vetting and ultimately adoption.
Participated in design sprints, usability sessions, and high altitude projects/problems—credibility in news, bringing better focus to local news, attribution for authors and publications to help empower journalists.
Designs for overflow interaction that elaborates on significance of news item to the complete story
Tasked with bringing some “kinetic flourish” to the static pages to help bring visual emphasis
Did large amount of illustration work while at google for decks, events, internal use.
